
The 11th arrondissement is one of the 20 arrondissements of Paris, France, situated on the right bank of the Seine. The 11th arrondissement was formed from the Faubourg du Temple and Faubourg Saint-Antoine suburbs of Paris, and it became a working-class district populated by workers and craftsmen. It was also the site of three prisons, the Bastille and the Petite and Grande Roquette prisons at the Square de la Roquette. In 1859, the 11th arrondissement was created from lands annexed to Paris, and the 11th arrondissement experienced industrialization during the late 19th century. By 2017, the 11th arrondissement came to have a population of 147,470 people. In 2006, 2017, and 2018, the 11th arrondissement experienced anti-Semitic murders; in 2015, the 11th arrondissement's Bataclan theatre was the site of an ISIL terrorist attack that killed 90 people.
