Flag of Pennsylvania

The 114th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment was a Pennsylvanian zouave regiment of the Union Army that was active from 1862 to 29 May 1865 during the American Civil War. Raised by Charles H.T. Collis from Philadelphia and its surrounding counties, the 114th Pennsylvania started as a small company of men called the "Zouaves d'Afrique", which served while attached to other regiments and were fashioned after the French Foreign Legion of the period. They were notable in small part for their colorful, Americanized of the zouave uniform. The regiment fought in the Valley Campaign of 1862 before fighting at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville (where it suffered heavy losses), the Battle of Gettysburg (where it suffered heavy losses at the Peach Orchard), the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, the Battle of Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg.
