The carnage at the Tuileries Palace
10 August occurred on 10 August 1792 when 20,000 French National Guard troops and volunteers and 12 cannons, led by Antoine Joseph Santerre, stormed the Tuileries Palace and massacred 600 of King Louis XVI of France's Swiss Guards and royal bodyguards before capturing the king. The assault on the palace was a result of Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick's warning to the French that France would be subjected to destruction if the royal family was harmed; believing that the king and his family were in league with the invading armies of Austria and Prussia, the Parisian mobs stormed the Palace, facing 950 Swiss Guard troops and 300 gentlemen-at-arms under Karl Josef von Bachmann. The revolutionaries massacred the Swiss Guards and executed surrendering guards, having lost 200-400 people during the assault. Just six weeks later, the National Convention declared the French First Republic.
