The Șor Party, originally the Socio-Political Movement "Equality", was a pro-Russian, national conservative political party in Moldova that was active from 1998 to 2023. The party supported the federalization of Moldova and the adoption of Russian as the official language of Moldova, while believing in a distinction between Moldovans and Romanians and harboring nostalgia for the Soviet Union and Muscovite-style authoritarianism. In 2016, imprisoned Orhei mayor and Israeli billionaire Ilan Shor took over the party and renamed it after himself, and the party affiliated itself with the Alliance of Conservative Reformists in Europe in 2018. In 2019, the Șor Party adopted a platform of economic populism, including free universal healthcare, free education (including higher education), increasing the size and scope of disability, maternity, and retirement benefits, creating modernized collective farms to work alongside the private sector, active state intervention in the economy, nationalizing foreign-owned energy companies, the reinstatement of the death penalty for dangerous criminals and the implementation of law and order, and a commitment to Moldovan independence and military neutrality. The party's platform combined social conservatism with Moldovan nationalism, a pro-Russian and anti-European foreign policy, and leftist economics designed to appeal to those longing for a return to Soviet times. The party was the main instigator of anti-government protests from 2022 to 2023, opposing Maia Sandu's pro-European policies and supporting Vladimir Putin's Russian regime amid the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Russian FSB and the country's communist and socialist parties backed Shor's protests, and, in February 2023, it was revealed that Russia was planning on organizing a coup in Moldova and installing Shor as their puppet dictator. At the same time, the Șor Party found itself mired in legal troubles due to its promotion of the interests of a foreign state, Marina Tauber's illegal funding of the party, the Șor Party's bribery of voters in the Gagauz region, and Shor's flight to Israel as his assets were confiscated. The party was banned on 19 June 2023 and replaced by the Chance. Duties. Realization. parliamentary group.
