The Île de la Cité is one of two natural islands in the Seine River within the city of Paris, the other being Île Saint-Louis. The island is in the center of the city, and the medieval city was refounded upon the island. In 1345, the construction of the Notre Dame cathedral was completed, and the Palais de Justice was also built on the island. Only the westernmost and northeastern extremities of the island are residential areas, with the rest of the island being home to government buildings and historic landmarks.
