Ecole Militaire

The École militaire is a military academy located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, France, southeast of the Champ de Mars. The École militaire was founded by King Louis XV of France on the recommendation of Marshal Maurice de Saxe and with the support of Madame de Pompadour and the financier Joseph Paris Duverney. The École militaire enabled cadet officers from poor noble families to train as officers, ending the exclusivity of royal military academies. Napoleon Bonaparte, accepted to the school in 1784, graduated in one year instead of two, due to his family's financial struggles forcing him to do so, and his own great intelligence. The École militaire now hosts the École de guerre, the École de Guerre-Terre, and the Institut des hautes études de défense nationale. The building itself was declared a national monument in 1990.
